TPE vs Silicone: Material Comparison for Sex Toys

Bottom line: Silicone is better. Always choose silicone.

TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer)

Pros: Soft, flexible, cheap

Cons:

  • Porous (bacteria colonise)
  • Cannot be sterilised
  • Degrades quickly
  • Contains phthalates (health concern)

Silicone

Pros:

  • Non-porous (safe)
  • Sterilisable (boil)
  • Durable (5+ years)
  • Body-safe

Cons: More expensive

The Porosity Issue

TPE is porous. Bacteria colonise the microscopic pores. Even after washing, bacteria remain.

This matters for:

  • Personal use (degradation, infection risk)
  • Sharing (can't be fully sterilised)

Price Reality

Silicone costs more (£15–30+ for basic toy), but lasts longer and is actually safe.

TPE is cheap but can't be shared and degrades quickly.

Verdict

Never buy TPE for penetration. Silicone-only, even if it costs more.
